Welcome to the Life During World War 2 homepage.

Sample 1:  Shelter:  Tommy is determined to help his dad put up the Anderson shelter in their back garden. His long-suffering dad might not appreciate Tommy's never-ending questions. He's hot, he's bothered, but somehow he manages to stay calm and explain things to his not very bright son.

Sample 2:  Christmas: The winter of 1940 was particularly severe, with sub-zero temperatures, lots of snow, air raids and rationing. It was clear that this was to be a very different type of Christmas than children had experienced before. Families did their best to celebrate, to try to go on with everyday life as best they could, but it was a real struggle. Peter is determined to wait up to meet Santa, but when he finally arrives, is he the real thing?

Sample 3:  Evacuation: Bobby has been evacuated from his London dockland home to South Wales. Many children were happy with their new families, and it’s possible that some of them didn’t look forward to the prospect of going home to their old life. Their parents too had to face the loneliness of being left on their own, especially mothers, whose husbands may well have been fighting in France or the Far East. Here Bobby's mother pays a painful visit to her son in his new home.

Sample 4:  Rationing:  As the war dragged on, more and more items were added to the ration list, so that running a household became a very difficult business. Children got used to doing without luxuries such as cakes and sweets, and mothers had to come up with new ideas to make mealtimes less desperate. Here Mrs Boggins is faced with a potential tragedy - there may be no sausages for her husband Bert's dinner.

Sample 5:  Yanks:  Scene 1 sees young Terry being told off by his mum for hanging around the American soldiers stationed in their Yorkshire village. Scene 2 deals with his older sister Beth, who's fallen for a GI but appreciates the culture clash between Blake's New York brashness and the conservatism of their traditional family and village life. Scene 3 is a showdown between Beth and her father. She wants to marry Blake before he sails to France to fight in the war. Dad's dead against the marriage, and basically issues an ultimatum: choose Blake and you say goodbye to your family. Which way will Beth decide?
