All of these texts are designed specifically for children to develop their reading skills. Whether fiction or non-fiction, most contain humour so that youngsters can (hopefully) have a laugh while they read. The samples marked 'OUP' were written for the Fresh Start reading scheme, developed by Ruth Miskin and published by Oxford University Press. Each text is aimed specifically at one or more target phonemes. As the children's reading develops and they work their way through the units, the range of phonemes in the texts widens. As an example, the first text, 'Hank Stock, Strong Man', is for early readers who need to practise their short vowel phonemes - a, e, i, o, and u. Later texts are aimed at a more advanced level - 'Norman Knight, Time-Travelling Superstar' focuses on the ou phoneme, while 'Superstitions: Sense or Nonsense?' contains many words with an -ous ending. 'Grand Theft At Bagshot Manor' is the final text in the Fresh Start series, and so contains all the phonemes that children would be expected to recognise at that stage of their development. The second series of texts will be available in 2011. I'll post samples when they're in print. More recently I've contributed a series of texts to OUP's 'Comprehension Plus' books, aimed at Year 5 and 6 students. The samples are marked 'CP'. The final three texts are further examples of the slightly bizarre humour we like to feature in our writing. Each text has been used in schools with children aged 8 to 11, and each has proved popular and successful. Although these texts are not available to buy or order through this website, the Fresh Start series can be viewed and purchased by clicking on the links above. I've has also written four books for the HarperCollins Big Cat series. The first is called 'Designing Places and Spaces', and examines how nearly every aspect of our lives is affected by designs and designers. The second is about the thrills and dangers of 'Extreme Sports'. The third and fourth are currently in the editing/printing process. One's about Natural Disasters, and the other explores the world of Spies and Secret Agents.
