Scrogged!  Sample 3:    The Scroggs camp. Grimm has some terrible news.

SCR 1             Why the meeting, brother Grimm, at such a late hour?

SCR 2             Aye, so soon before midnight!

SCR 3             We’re wasting precious time! (general murmurs of agreement)

GRIMM            Silence! You should know me well enough by now, all of you, to know that I would only call a meeting at this time for a serious reason .... a very serious, very grave reason.

SCR 1             What could be more important than hunting and tricking our enemies, those smelly kids? (more agreement)

GRIMM            (holding up hand for silence)  Fellow Scroggs, I have some dreadful news for you. (tense, waiting silence)  We have a traitor in our camp! (uproar amongst Scroggs)

SCR 1             A traitor? Impossible!

SCR 2             No-one has ever dared to break the Scrogg code!

SCR 3             I don’t believe it!

SCR 4             Just wait till I get my hands on him!

SCR 5             We’ll tear him limb from limb!

SCR 6             Punch him!

SCR 7             Kick him!

SCR 8             Break his legs!

SCR 9             Break his neck!

SCR 4             Pull his teeth out!

SCR 5             Scratch him!

SCR 6             Bite him!

SCR 7             Kill him!

(others take up the cry: “Kill him!” GRIMM holds up hand and the uproar slowly dies down to silence again)

GRIMM            I don’t think I need to tell you what a danger this rat, this horrible heap of dung, this filthy, cowardly worm could do to our plans, so close as we are to the midnight chimes.

SCR 2             His name! His name! (others  join in: “Who is it?” “Tell us”!” etc)

GRIMM            (waits for silence)  The traitor is amongst us at this very moment.

SCR 3             What? Here?

SCR 4             One of us? (suspicious looks all round)

GRIMM            Yes! His name ...... I know not .... yet. But my all-seeing eyes saw his dreadful act as he deliberately, knowingly and willingly helped a child (gasps) ... a child who will now, at midnight, be able to return to her home and wake up to presents lying at the foot of her bed. (general cringeing and snarling) Unknown to him, my eyes followed his shadowy shape, followed him as he strode confidently, happily even, to this very camp! (mayhem as Scroggs stand and back away from each other, accusing, threatening)

GRIMM            Brothers! (waits for silence) There is one sure way to unmask this despicable fiend.

SCROGGS     How? Tell us! We’ll kill him! etc

GRIMM            We all know the Code of the Scroggs. We all know that which is written in blood. Our blood! That only a true Scrogg will be able to recite the Sacred Oath, the oath that we all swore would only be broken on pain of …….. death!
